What's your hair type?
Face-shape categories are approximate and many faces blend two shapes — these recommendations are a starting point for a conversation with your stylist, not a strict rule.
What is the Face Shape Hairstyle Finder?
The Face Shape Hairstyle Finder is a free quiz that helps you work out whether your face is oval, round, square, heart, long or diamond-shaped, and then suggests hairstyles that tend to suit it. Answer five short questions about your face, tell us your hair type, and you’ll get your face shape, styles that tend to flatter it, and what to be careful with. There’s no photo upload and no sign-up.
How it works
- Answer five questions about your face length, jawline, forehead, cheekbones and chin.
- Choose your hair type: straight, wavy, curly or coily.
- Get your result, with styles that tend to suit your shape and a note for your hair type.
It takes about 90 seconds.
The six face shapes
- Oval: balanced and slightly longer than it is wide, with a jaw a touch narrower than the cheekbones.
- Round: about as wide as it is long, with soft angles and a rounded jaw and chin.
- Square: the jaw, cheekbones and forehead are similarly wide, giving strong, angular lines.
- Heart: the forehead is the widest part, narrowing to a smaller, sometimes pointed chin.
- Long (oblong): noticeably longer than it is wide.
- Diamond: the cheekbones are the widest part, with a narrower forehead and chin.
How to get an accurate result
- Pull your hair back off your face and look straight into a mirror in good light.
- Compare the width of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw, and notice which is widest.
- Look at the shape of your jaw and chin, not only your hairline.
- Answer for your face as it is, not how you’d like it to look.
- If you fall between two shapes, that’s normal. Read the neighbouring shapes too.
Face shape is a guide, not a rule
Face shape recommendations are styling conventions that hairstylists use to balance proportions. They aren’t strict rules. Your hair type, texture, density, hairline and how much time you want to spend styling matter just as much. Treat your result as a starting point, and show it to your stylist, who can see your face in person.
Using your result with your hair type
- Straight hair: cuts show their lines clearly, so ask your stylist for precise shaping.
- Wavy hair: your natural texture adds soft volume, so let it do some of the shaping.
- Curly hair: curls shrink when dry, so ask your stylist to cut with that in mind.
- Coily hair: significant shrinkage is normal, so discuss cutting stretched versus dry.

FAQs
How do I find out my face shape?
Pull your hair back and look straight into a mirror. Compare the width of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw, and notice the shape of your chin. The quiz walks you through these steps and gives you a result.
How accurate is the Face Shape Hairstyle Finder?
It gives a solid starting point based on your answers. Self-assessment is approximate, and many faces blend two shapes, so a stylist looking at you in person can give a more precise read.
Can I have more than one face shape?
Yes, it’s very common. Many faces sit between two shapes. If your result doesn’t feel quite right, read the descriptions of the neighbouring shapes too.
Do I have to follow the recommendations?
No. They’re common styling guidelines, not rules. If you love a style that isn’t on your list, it can still look great on you
Does face shape matter if I have curly or coily hair?
It can still help, but texture and shrinkage change how a cut looks once it’s dry. Ask your stylist how they cut curly or coily hair so the finished shape matches what you expect.
Do I need to upload a photo or sign up?
No. You answer a few questions and get your result straight away.
Can my face shape change?
Your bone structure stays the same, but weight changes and age can shift how your face looks, and your hairstyle changes how it appears. It’s fine to retake the quiz whenever you like.
