What is the Hair Type Quiz?

The Hair Type Quiz is a free tool that helps you find out whether your hair is straight, wavy, curly or coily. Answer a few simple questions about how your hair looks and behaves, and you’ll get your result along with what it means for your everyday care.

How it works

  1. Answer the questions about your hair’s natural pattern, texture and how it behaves when it dries.
  2. Get your hair type result.
  3. Use it to choose the right products and routine for your hair.

Why your hair type matters

Straight hair gets oily faster because scalp oil travels down the strand easily. Curly and coily hair is more prone to dryness because oil has a harder time reaching the ends. Knowing your type helps you pick products, washing frequency and styling methods that actually suit your hair, instead of copying advice written for someone else.

Tips for the most accurate result

  • Take the quiz on clean, product-free hair.
  • Look at your hair in its natural, air-dried state.
  • Check your hair in natural light if you can.
  • If you’re between two types, that’s normal. Many people have a mix of patterns.

What to do next

What are the 4 hair types?

The 4 main hair types are Type 1 (straight), Type 2 (wavy), Type 3 (curly), and Type 4 (coily). Each type is further split into subtypes A, B, and C based on how loose or tight the pattern is for example, 3A is looser curls, 3C is tighter curls.

How do I find out my hair type?

Let your hair air-dry with no products and look at its natural shape: flat and straight is Type 1, loose S-bends are Type 2, springy curls are Type 3, and tight coils or zigzags are Type 4. Shrinkage, frizz, and how close curls start to the scalp also help narrow down the subtype.

Can I have more than one hair type?

Yes, most people have more than one pattern on their head — often looser waves or curls at the crown and tighter curls near the nape. This is completely normal and just means your care routine may need to address different sections differently.

Is 2A the same as straight hair?

No , 2A is the loosest wavy pattern, with a subtle S-bend, but it’s still distinct from Type 1 (straight), which has no bend at all. 2A hair often looks nearly straight when wet but shows soft waves once fully dry.

What hair type has the most shrinkage?

Type 4 (coily) hair typically has the most shrinkage, often 50% or more between wet and dry length, because it has the tightest bends per strand. Type 3 (curly) hair also shrinks noticeably, usually in the 20–30% range.

Does hair type change over time?

Yes, your natural curl pattern can shift due to hormonal changes, pregnancy, aging, or damage from heat and chemical treatments. Many people also find their hair type looks different depending on length, since longer hair often relaxes the pattern with its own weight.

Why does my hair type quiz result seem wrong?

Heat styling, chemical treatments, and product build-up can temporarily mask your natural pattern, so a quiz taken on damaged or heavily styled hair may not reflect your true type. For the most accurate result, take the quiz on hair that’s been recently washed with no products and allowed to air-dry naturally
